  •  Death of Thomas Savery (c. 1650–1715), inventor of an early steam engine (1698), "A new invention for raising of water and occasioning motion to all sorts of mill work by the impellent force of fire, which will be of great use and advantage for drayning mines, serveing townes with water, and for the working of all sorts of mills where they have not the benefitt of water nor constant windes."

  • 250th anniversary of Watt's separate condenser
  • Die Bergakademie im sächsischen Freiberg wird durch Franz Xaver von Sachsen unter dem Namen Kurfürstlich-Sächsische Bergakademie zu Freiberg als Ausbildungsstätte für Bergleute gegründet.
  • birth of Evan Evans (Birmingham), English inventor and technician and pioneer of cotton machine-spinning in Saxony

  • Humphry Davy invents the miner's lamp
  • Patent of the rotary cross cutter for finishing woollen cloth by John Lewis of Brimscombe near Stroud, in Gloucestershire.
  • In Österreichs Hauptstadt Wien wird das "k. k. polytechnische Institut", die heutige Technische Universität, eröffnet

  • May 5th: first passsenger train on th European continent, between Brussels and Mechelen (Belgium)

  • 04.03.1890: Opening of the Forth Bridge to railway traffic: then the longest spans in the world, also the first great steel bridge.

  • Eugene Sullivan and William Taylor co-invented Pyrex in New York City

  • Peter Goldmark invents modern color television system
  • Death of Arthur Vierendeel, inventor of the Vierendeel truss

1965

  •  Opening of the Zeeland Brug over the Ooster-Schelde, at that moment the longest bridge in the world (5022 m)
  • The Dutch minister Den Uyl announces the closure of all the Dutch coalmines- minister Den Uyl kondigde aan de kolenwinning te stoppen. 
    In The Netherlands this will be remembered (Jaar van de Mijnen - Year of the Mines)
  • On december 22nd the Belgian government announces the closure of the Limburg coalmine of Zwartberg and five other mines in Wallonia

1975

  • European Architectural Heritage Year
  • Flanders: the distillery of Hasselt, now National Museum of Distilling, protected by law as the first industrial monument of Flanders

1985

  • establishment by volunteers of the 'Ecomuseum en Archief van de Boomse Baksteen' (Ecomuseum and Archive of the Boom Brickworks) to save and interprete the disappearing rich brick and tilemaking heritage in the Rupe valley near Antwerp.
